Aedas' Pulsa: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and NatureResidential Design Inspired by Repulse Bay's Azure Waves
Aedas, a global architecture firm, has created a residential design masterpiece, Pulsa, that harmoniously blends with the natural beauty of Repulse Bay in Hong Kong. The design, which won the Golden A' Design Award in 2020, takes inspiration from the gentle lapping of azure blue waves on the shore, resulting in a fluid form that mirrors the movement of waves.
The uniqueness of Pulsa lies in its ribbon-like form that responds to varying functions and spatial requirements. This fluid form creates changing profiles, with houses arranged in two rows to minimize disturbance to the natural slope on site. This arrangement also optimizes the sea view towards Repulse Bay for all houses. The curves of the design not only add to its aesthetic appeal but also functionally improve the quality of interior space.
Through the diffraction and reflection brought about by the sculptural building profile, a vivid and impressive experimental sequence comes alive. Residents are always surrounded by the adjoining natural beauty, creating a living experience that is both luxurious and harmonious with nature.
Pulsa was realized using environmentally friendly design components. The development achieved BEAMplus GOLD assessment. The insulated glass panels with Low-E coating help reduce heat transfer across the building envelope. Other components include a robust solar thermal system to generate “free” hot water, cross-ventilation to enhance thermal comfort, and rainwater harvesting to collect and treat rainwater for cleaning and car washing.
The project was completed in November 2018, with a gross floor area of 3,906 sq.m. It consists of eight houses, each with five storeys, including one mezzanine floor. The design team included Keith Griffiths, Cary Lau, Henry Chau, Ivy Ng, Jan Li, Y.K. Chung, and Joel Wong.
